You've Got ONE Chance and Split-Seconds To Defend Yourself If You're Attacked, Will You Get Home Safe And Alive or Not?

Pretty harsh and direct, right? Well, our adult self-defense program is designed to get you home, keep you alive, and give you the knowledge to handle any situation under any circumstances. We teach you a simple three-step personal protection method to defend yourself against any attack without having to memorize techniques, forms, or patterns.

Thousands of satisfied customers since 1998

Hear what Mr. Deaver's has to say about this program

If you've watched any of the news channels in the last six months, you've heard all the stories of people being attacked or killed.

When watching that, you've probably asked yourself the question, "What would I have done in that situation." Or, you know you don't know what you would have done.

It isn't something you have to be ashamed of. Most people don't know.

There was a time when I had no idea what to do when it came to protecting myself or defending off an attacker/attackers, let alone protecting my family from something like this.

But, at one time, I decided I never wanted to be helpless. I never wanted to stand by as something horrible was happening to my family. I wanted to know what to do, how to do it, and how to get myself and/or my family home safely.

I'm betting you are wanting the same thing. You want to remove any feelings of helplessness or hopelessness. You want to know how to handle any situation under chaotic circumstances, and how to calmly take care of the immediate threat.

If that is you, then my adult self-defense program is going to give you the tools to defend yourself, the skills to know how to use the tools, and the confidence to apply your skill sets to defend yourself or your family IF the situation arises.

My absolute passion is teaching self-defense skills that work in violent situations.

Our World Isn't Getting Safer, It's Getting Crazier

Not to sound like a doom and gloomist, but let's get real. You, I, anyone could find themselves in a threating situation at anytime in our lives. What you do in those extreme moments will determine if you go to the hospital, morgue, jail, or home.

Here are three things you've got to understand right now:

No one is going to help you during a violent situation!
The police come AFTER, not during the attack.
Only you can protect and defend yourself.

Frist, when the sh^t hits the fan, everyone is out for themselves. Why is that? Well, when chaos erupts, the untrained mind hits the panic button. And when that panic button has been hit, we revert back to our animal brain and do only what it has been commanded to do. That command is usually flee, freeze, or fall. Most people away from the situation. If you are in it, they will run from you rather than help you.

Second, you can't just count on the police to come and save you. They will if you have enough time, but most likely you won't have the time.

Last, knowing this should tell your 'animal' brain that you need to do the most important thing and that is FIGHT. Fight for your life, know you are worthy, and do so as if this will be your last day.

But, what do you do before, during, and after a violent situation? That's exactly what I am going to help you with. If you find yourself in this, you will have the tools to do what is necessary to get out alive and get home.

Here's how I breakdown this self-defense system so it works for you

First: Mindset

First thing is mindset. Self-defense is 90% mindset and 10% physical.

If you believe in yourself, you abilities, and what is needed to neutralize or end a situation, then you've already got most of your job completed. The rest will come down to the second and third ingredients I talk about on this simple, effective defensive system.

This first part requires these three things:

Awareness is about what's going on inside and outside of you. If you are attacked, they'll either interview or ambush you. The more you are aware, the less likely they will get away with accomplishing either of these options. I have built in drills to help you gain more awareness as you get more skills.

Don't misunderstand confidence with cockiness. Confidence is knowing yourself and what you are capable of without having to shout about it or create a big commotion. You'll be gaining skills and the knowledge of how to use the skills. That is true confidence, something you can count on in any situation.

Being assertive is important. If you need to protect yourself, then zero hesitation is required. Nevertheless, you can't be aggressive either. Having the knowledge of knowing the level of force you can use if you need to neutralize a threat is vital to you saying out of jail or the hospital.

Second: Fight Knowledge

The second thing needed is fight knowledge.

Defending yourself is going to be about fighting. You may not want to fight, but not knowing how to fight is a sure way of failing if you are attacked. There are only three major elements you have to understand when it comes to fighting that translates into defending yourself from an attack.

Get these down well and you'll know how to protect yourself and your loved ones in any violent situation.

Here are the three things you'll learn:

This is the distance between you and the threat you face. What means do they have to harm you. And, what you need to do to prevent that from happening. That distance only you will know if you are in the situation. How you manage the space will determine if you put yourself in harms way or not.

The timing it takes for someone to be able to cover the distance needed to harm you is decided by what means they are trying to attack you with. This is where split-seconds comes into play. It takes time to attack, and it takes time to defend. Training your timing and use of that time gets you in and out of harms way.

Think of this like a car crash. If you see someone going to slam into you and you don't move, then you get hit. As a driver, you know how to avoid the crash. When it comes to being attacked, you have to know how to avoid, and how to create the collision. The more effective you are, the faster you can end it.

These three components look and sound simple, but they aren't easy.

This isn't about style of martial arts or anything like that. This is about getting the fundamental elements of fighting down so you never have to worry about a fight or any other personal safety situation.

How long will it take you to get good at this?

That depends on you. But, for the most part, I have seen most students take between four to six months to have a really good understanding of these elements. With that knowledge alone, you can defend yourself against most all attacks you'd find yourself in on the street.

It doesn't mean you are a master of them, but you have a good working understanding and can apply it safely and effectively.

Third: Physical Action

As you build the foundation to avoid being in harms way, while simultaneously getting in the right spot to create a collision, there comes the third part of neutralizing an attack.

If you have to launch an attack of some sorts, then how effective and accurate you do it will determine how quickly you end the situation.

That requires learning these three things:

You might be thinking you need to be Bruce Lee fast to effectively launch your attack. That isn't the case. Speed comes down to a set of principles and the ingredients that need to be in your attack to get the job done. We teach you the timing of it all so you can efficiently neutralize a threat with the right response.

Power is NOT about strength or muscle mass. Yes, a larger person does have the potential to have more power, but a smaller person can generate the same amount of power if you know the mechanics of movement. This is where we teach you the mechanics and how to generate your power.

Without accuracy, there is wasted motion. This robs you of endurance and stamina. That is why accurately attacking the right areas on the human body will give you the best chance of stopping an attack with the most amount of efficiency. We will teach you where and how to attack the human structure.

It is a self-defense system that is conducive to my age and physical abilities.

Powerful State of Mind

The more you improve your state of mind, the happier you are, the healthier you are, and the more fulfilled you will be. The warrior training we take you through helps bring out the best in your state of mind.

Sharpen Your Focus

Developing awareness improves your inner focus while sharpening your situational awareness. With each session, you will strengthen your inner muscle and create a better sense of yourself and the moments you participate in.

Lower Your Stress Levels

Finding inner peace can be challenging. Getting a state of mind that is at rest takes different approaches for different people. Here, we use the martial arts way as the vehicle to help you find peace, feel calmness, and lower your stress levels.

Reduce Tension

As we get older, things begin to tighten up. Our muscles aren't as loose as they once were. But, you can reverse this and gain more flexibility and reduce tension in your body with the methods we teach to relax and identify when you are tight.

Get Into Great Shape

We know that self-defense without being fit is a recipe for disaster. In our program, you'll get to develop your strength, stamina, and endurance. You may never have to fight anyone, but you'll get fighting fit to battle life itself.

Gain More Confidence

One of the most important aspects of learning self-defense skills is being confident in yourself. If you don't believe, you have already lost. You'll get the knowledge and the competency to be confident in all your life.

Become More Self-Aware

You gain self-awareness skills that you can use everywhere in you life. The ability to see what is happening around you - situational awareness, and the ability to know what is going on inside can be a powerful tool to know yourself at all times.

Meet New People While Learning Fight Skills

This is a great way to meet new people. I have met some of my best friends in martial arts. We grow together, suffer together, and learn together. That bond can be powerful and rewarding. This is a great way to develop personal protection skills and step outside your comfort zone.

What Makes Our Program Different

Skill Development

Our program isn't just an 'activity' or fitness program. You get to develop the skills needed to defend yourself. You get to improve your confidence in your ability to fend off an attacker and handle a chaotic situation.

You don't have to have previous training. You don't have to be athletic. You don't have to have coordination. We provide you with all the skills you need to learn and grow with from day one.

Simple to Try a Class

No uniform or equipment is required to try class. No uniform is ever required to train. You don't have to feel awkward, and you don't have to invest in something that might not work out. Just wear athletic workout clothes.

This is not a sport

We don't train to be a competitive sport. Many martial arts schools have that as an emphasis in their program. This program is self-defense driven. You'll get skills for the street.

Women Thrive Here

Women in our class excel like warriors. They gain the skills to defend themselves, and the confidence to believe in their ability to defend against bigger, stronger attackers.

Our classes our designed and split to meet the needs of different age groups. Therefore, when you come to class, we will make sure you are partnered with someone good to work with.

3 Facts You Should Know Before Trying Any Martial Arts

Structured Classes

The classes should have some sort of structure to them. This develops the skill requires for all levels and provides a challenge associated to it. Growth happens when you are taken out of your comfort zone and placed in an environment where you have to figure out how to excel and succeed. Here at Ankeny Martial Arts, we structure our classes to develop each student at all stages of their training.

Professionally Trained

We pride ourselves as having the BEST instructors for you to learn from. This means that I personally see to it that my instructors meet the requirements to be an instructor for each age group they are helping with. They go through weekly, monthly, and yearly instructor-training sessions where they learn how to develop students and make skills age-appropriate so you know you will get the best.

Blueprint for Success

To get where you want to go in life, it is recommended to have a map or blueprint you can follow. We know success isn't an accident. To reach your goals, succeed, and come out a champion in the end, you need a roadmap. That is what we provide with our program. It is the roadmap that builds your confidence, gives you the skills, and provides the self-defense knowledge that will work for you in all situations.

Here's What Some of Our Students Have To Say

Conducive to my age

Martial Arts is something I have always wanted to do. In retirement I now have the time to do so. I chose the art of Hapkido. It is a self-defense art that is conducive to my age and physical ability. I am learning techniques and am not getting thrown to the ground. Mr. Deaver, the instructor, is knowledgeable in both Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do. He is patient and “he” is the one who receives the abuse!

Tim C

Wonderful experience

After watching my daughter engage for a month, I decided to make it a father-daughter venture and join myself. It has been a wonderful experience. It is something that we get to spend time together doing. The classes accommodate adults and children and it is so much more than self-defense.

Brian Clark

I chose to train at Ankeny Martial Arts because I wanted to learn self-defense. I wanted to learn a system that was well-rounded and they definitely helped me learn skills that will work when I need them. But, I get something way more invaluable from my training than just fight skills. This helps me with my mental and physical strength. Plus, my focus is finally something that doesn't affect me anymore.

What You Learn In Our Self-Defense Program

When it comes to learning self-defense, how you train matters. We take a four-style approach to teaching self-defense. This makes for a well-rounded student who can handle any situation or circumstance they find themselves in. And, as crazy as times are getting today, we make sure to help you feel confident because you are competent.

Boxers have some of the best hand skills and footwork. One of the things we see most when someone gets attacked is they get punched or pushed. It is a natural thing for humans to use their hands, so we incorporated Boxing into our adult self-defense program to make sure you know how to defend against someone punching or pushing you. This skill gives you stability, balance, and coordination. Something you can use even in other physical activities you do throughout your day. Plus, this is one of the most empowering styles for you to gain confidence from.

Kicking (Kickboxing/Muay Thai)

The second thing we see from students who get attacked is they get kicked. This is why we incorporate the skills from Kickboxing and Muay Thai. These two styles have their traditions steeped in using their legs to defend and attack with. When you know how someone is going to attack, it is much easier to defend. In addition to this, we've also added from other kicking styles like Tae Kwon do and Savate. This allows you to get exposed to what attackers do and how to defend it. Again, it is about competence so you can be confident.

Kickboxing Ankeny IA

The last way most physical attacks happen is that you might be grabbed or tackled. Knowing how to defend yourself from being tackled, pushed to the ground, or taken down in other ways, is important for you so you are well-rounded. In addition to this, you gain the knowledge of what to do if you are on the ground. How to defend, attack if needed, and how to get back to your feet. Groundwork starts to close the circle in our program while giving you the best skills possible. This is NOT MMA.

Our world is changing. Let's be honest. So, teaching you about weapons defense can be tricky. We take a more traditional weapons training approach like the use of a staff(represents a bat), knife, and sticks. Having the right knowledge, respect, and understanding is vital to getting a full program. This introduction and continued training also makes it fun for you. You get to learn, reduce your fear, and feel comfortable that you can defend yourself if attacked with a bat, stick, or some other weapon.

Here's Where We Are Located

Why Choose Us?

I am not going to claim we teach everything, or that we can help everyone.

What I will say is that if you are looking for this:

1. Self-Defense skills
2. Getting a great workout
3. Gaining the confidence to protect yourself

Then, I would encourage you to try one of our classes because the above is what we specialize in building and teaching in our adult classes.

I've spent the last 25+ years refining my program to provide you with these specific skills and knowledge. Through this process, you will uncover something powerful, discover what you are capable of, and use it to be the best you can be.

This same process develops laser focus. You learn to concentrate on the moment and stay connected to it so you don't allow distractions to steal your attention.

Lastly, you'll find your voice and know how to stand up for yourself. I have countless adults who say they finally asked for a raise or better position at work because of their new confidence.

All this leads to you squashing any attack that might happen. There is always someone or something that plays the antagonist in our lives. Today, it might a person, tomorrow it might be our own thoughts.

Some FAQs

Do I need previous training?

No, you don't have to have previous training. This is a total beginner-friendly program. 99.9% of all our students started with zero training. Plus, there are beginners starting all the time. We know how intimidating it is to come and try martial arts or training like this. You will NOT be thrown in the ring with some ego-maniac fighter who is trying to knock your block off. We help you develop skills, learn how to defend yourself, and train with safety in mind.

Do I need to be in good shape?

No, you don't have to be in shape to try or do this self-defense class. Majority of all our students started out of shape and found they got into great shape training in this program. So, if you are out of shape or not physically strong, let us help you develop this one step at a time.

I have an injury, can I still do this?

Now, that might depend on the injury or limitation, but there are very few limitations or injuries that we can't work around. As we get older, there is always something that we need to modify and adjust to still do what we love. Here at Ankeny Martial Arts, I take all that into account and help you modify anything to fit you and your abilities.

Is this safe for women?

Yes! Gender doesn't matter. We have trained hundreds of ladies in our classes and teach them how to defend and attack safely no matter their size. We teach you how to generate power from your structure and not your muscle mass.

I'm a bit older, can I still do this?

Age is only a limitation if you make it such. We take measures to help anyone no matter their age learn and develop the skills they need to protect themselves. So, if you are silvering or silver, let's give this a shot and allow me to show you how you can do this and gain the skills you want.

Are uniforms required?

NO. We do not require uniforms and do not train in uniforms. So, all you need is to wear comfortable workout clothes like athletic shorts, yoga pants, or sweatpants and a t-shirt.

What gear do I need to try class?

You won't need any gear or equipment to try class. We usually train with boxing gloves and kickboxing shin guards, but none of that is needed for a trial.
