What Mason has to say about our program...

Meet You Head Instructor:

Kevin Deaver

Hi. I've been dedicated to building leaders and champions in life for the last 25+ years.

Let me share a timeline to learn more about who I am...

The start
the lesson
new life
My Mission
Present

The spark

It all started on the first day I took a martial arts class. I fell in love with what martial arts allowed me to be. It allowed me to be myself, find who I was meant to be, and allowed me a path of growth I could use all my life. Now, I don't expect or feel everyone who trains in martial arts should have the same path as I did. I simply want others to find their own path, have the courage to follow their calling, and discover the hidden magic that lies within themselves. With all that, one can write their life story without having any regrets. What martial arts allowed me to have, I think other can have the same taste.

I thought it was all about fighting

Self-defense was one of the main reason why I got into martial arts. I was tired of getting teased and pushed around. So, I wanted to learn how to fight. I got those skills. I teach those skills because I know many people need them. But, I realized that martial arts was WAY more than just about fighting. It was when I was tested by our own thoughts, feelings, and emotions that I realized all the training I did helped me conquer my dark times. I think martial arts can help those who are open to self-discovery and willing to step outside their comfort zone to achieve a stronger self.

My new life

It's not an easy decision to embark on the path of being a martial arts teacher. You have to learn so many new things...and those lessons come with a lot of disappointment and discouragement. In a way, you put on a white belt again and become a true beginner. You have to put aside your point of view. You have to be truly selfless and step in the shoes of every single one of your students lives. You have to be the one to understand them, allow them to find their way, and be okay with them making mistakes, falling, and failing so they can become who they are meant to be. I learned it was no longer about me. It is about you, the student, and your journey.

Building leaders & champions

My journey through martial arts has taken on different stories. The story that I am most proud of is the one of building leaders and champions in life. I've competed, I've won trophies, and I've helped hundreds compete as well, but when you step away from all that you are left with the competition of life. How you lead your life and where you become a champion will determine how happy you are. Building these types of leaders is my mission.

Never stop learning

Constant and never ending learning isn't just something I talk to my students about. It is a "code of conduct" I live by. Being a student, helps me find better ways to teach new students who come in. It allows me to better understand your needs and the needs of your family. With that knowledge, I can help you achieve success faster.

Beginner-Friendly No Ego Zone

A message from Mr. Deaver:

We know how intimidating it is for any one of any age to step foot in a martial arts school. With this in mind, we cultivated a beginner-friendly, no ego, no tough guy zone where you can come, learn, make friends, and build the skills you wish to have.

You don't have to have previous training, gear, or some special athleticism to take part in our classes. We teach how and what you need to learn from day one. From there, you build upon those basics.

What others are saying

Satisfaction, Guaranteed

Emphasis character and leadership

“My son started as a Tiger and then began Tae Kwon Do and is now also in the NinjaTrix program. He loves it! The Academy of Martial Arts is wonderful. The Deavers, Master Harp, Mr. Inman, and others who help are caring and dedicated teachers. They are welcoming and we appreciate the emphasis on character skills and leadership they promote. Glad we found them!”

Kimberly Ann

It's like family here

“The Academy isn’t just a place to learn martial arts, it’s a family that welcomes everyone no matter what. One of the things that has impressed me the most is the teaching of the Tenants of Tae Kwon Do (courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit) to the kids. I’ve been a part of the family for 3 ½ years now. It’s amazing to see the growth and change of the kids who come in.”

Shelly Sullivan

Teaching heart

“Master Deaver is definitely focused on the training and teaching of the arts. Excellent demeanor and a teaching heart. Thank you so much for helping us progress to the next step!!”

Chris & Amy Labby

We love how respect is emphasized

“My son has been attending for 4 years, and we are so happy with how much he has learned and progressed. The instructors are patient and great with the kids. It’s very affordable, especially when they can attend class up to 5 times per week. We love how respect is emphasized both in and outside the classroom.”

Why Choose Ankeny Martial Arts?

We know that just being in the community for a long time doesn't entitle us to anything. We believe that you have to earn everything you want.

If you want to gain confidence, focus, or self-defense skills, it will take work, effort, a shift in mindset, and the perseverance to learn and grow.

Earning is one of the leading principle we teach here are at Ankeny Martial Arts. Every student has to earn their belt. That takes work, that takes dedication, and that takes a winner's mindset.

All those things are built over time. No road to success is easy. It may be simple to understand (which we make learning simple), but the element of work is within each and every class.

We are leaders in building students to be more than they believe they can be. We lead by example, we lead from the front, and we teach you or your child how to be a champion in life.

Some Frequently Asked Questions

I hope you find these FAQs helpful, but if you don't find the answer to a question you have, please give us a call.

Do I need anything to try a class?

Nope. The only thing you need is an open mind. All you have to do is wear comfortable workout clothes, bring a water bottle, and be ready to have fun and learn. Again, we know trying a martial arts class can be very intimidating that is why we do our best to make the process simple and positive. We'll chat after your class and I can give you all the details about what is needed from there if you feel this will be a good fit for you.

Are classes female-friendly?

Yes. We have a no-ego, no-tough guy zone in our school. You are most likely coming to us to gain confidence, so confidence is what we are going to help you build. That means, we don't allow bullying in our school. There is no "king" of the cage in here. Nevertheless, women and girls are treated equally and are taught how to be warriors just like everyone else. Gender doesn't play into how and what we teach you.

How safe is it to train?

Safety is a priority here at Ankeny Martial Arts. You'll train in a safe way, with safety equipment when needed, and with others who have learned focus, concentration, and control. Every student is taken through a process of skill development to know how to protect themselves at all times.

How long does it take to get a black belt?

Whoa...let's slow down a bit. First, you have to earn your white belt and then it takes step-after-step to get to the next levels. Nevertheless, this process can take between 36-48 months. Everyone's path looks a little different. That depends on your drive, dedication, determination, and discipline. That is the black belt way and when a student displays these as if it is who they are(inside and outside the school), then you are already a black belt.
